We hear people close to Trump sold him on the idea the Iranians were jacking him around in the negotiations (which they do to everyone). But the guy who is really jacking him around is Netanyahu, who used the cover of negotiations to launch his attack. Certain events in 1941 come to mind for some reason. The Iranians have a play here, if they have the wit to see it (doubtful).

And Donald should, and might, recognize something else. If he joins in, he will cede control of the news cycle, always his chief concern, to the Iranians. Any given day, he could be confronted by headlines that make him look weak (Oil Prices Soar!), and there won't anything he can do about it.

Rothkopf - You seem to be very sure about things you cannot know to be true. Please substantiate the things you state as fact (when did you speak to the people referenced here so you can speak so definitively) or disclose your motivations for making all of these assumptions for this audience. If you cannot do that perhaps you can man up and admit this is just your hypothesis about the events and the motives of others. You could also choose to be transparent about your motives.

I don't feel sorry for trump, but what a miserable existence. You only live once and he's ruining the last years of his life by not walking away from this. I'd rather live in a shack in the woods with my dog chopping wood for the fire to heat cans of beans for dinner than end my days like he is.

I can’t bring myself to read this, the Middle East eternal f–up is too much for me. But your title, “T stumbling toward disaster”? No argument there. That likelihood of disaster —re somewhere, somehow in the the ME— was referred to ever so briefly during the campaign, but couldn’t get any traction. So here we are.

Trump will authorize the dropping of mega bombs, declare victory and walk away, just as he has done in the Ukraine and Gaza. His 73 million voting base still loves him .. only spiraling inflation and unemployment would detach his devotees, and 17 months until the midterms.. I fear a repeat of the Reichstag fire …
