David, this is beautiful. I love that you tell about your dad and what this country meant. I am crying reading this. I know I will be rereading this often.
I believe today is the day we need to cry. Look around and feel the freedoms we love, it's a magnificent feeling. Next try to imagine them gone. Feel the devastation. Let it pour into your veins and cry, long and hard. Think about what you will do to help save our democracy. Make your voice heard. Don't cry November 5th. It will be too late.
Great column, especially the part about directing our attention to the history we must make rather than to the history we've already seen. But I'm one of those workers in the trenches of the Democratic Party who will have to make some of that history. And all of these media attacks and all the disagreements are only draining our strength and resolve, which are the very assets we need as we move forward. The Republicans NEVER do this, yet we Dems delight in making our work a thousand times more difficult. I'm not a pundit, just a precinct worker, but I'll say this: Joe Biden is our candidate and our leader. If he isn't, we lose the election and our democracy. Please help us.
Formerly a DC resident (30 years) now living in NZ since 2006 and working as a climate activist- I swear it's a leftist thing, not just Democratic. I spend sooooo much time in Zoom whilst everyone else is dithering over process or spending hour upon hour worrying about how to word whatever is this week's topic - all worthy ideas, I am sure but nothing actually gets done. And now we have our own rabid right wing gov't. So thank you for your work Deb and I know your pain. On the brighter side, I just sent in my overseas registration this week- for Pennsylvania. Also on the brighter side, since I've been out of the US my experience of Dems Abroad is that they work their socks off too.
I understand your concern. I believe that we can endure the current debate and emerge stronger from it. The key is that we are motivated and unified as we approach the election. I am 100% confident we will be.
The last one if the #felontrump getting. #dementiadon

Thank you very much. You frame it all so well.
Thank you! That's quite the compliment coming from you! Can you tell I like your writing style and what you think :-)
This certainly hits the mark. I appreciate your sharing memories of your father in light of our current situation.
*in the opening paragraph: “…did not take miracles [lightly]”👍
Thanks. Fixed.

I really and truly hope you're right! Onward.
Thank you for your work.
From a 92 year old woman, I thank you. We will win.
I agree.
