I learned last week from Barb McQuade that Zimmerman’s Deli was THE place to go in Ann Arbor. She was kind enough to answer when I asked after seeing a photo of her and Jill Wine-Banks in front of it. They looked like they were having a great time!

I am glad to hear the Harris-Walz joy is spreading in rural and middle America. I am also impressed you drive that far, but leaving a pet behind. I find driving to Agoura Hills CA at 5 1/2hrs by myself to visit my sister is bad. But it did give you, and thus us, something to get hopeful about. Let’s hope we Dems can ride Dobbs right into the WH and take control of the House and Senate! LFG!

I live in Eugene, Oregon (another college football town). It’s a deeply blue place, so you always see lots of signs for Democrats around elections, but this year is amazing. The thing I notice is all the homemade signs. The Harris-Walz campaign of course didn’t have their merch, including signs, right away, so people just made their own. “WE’RE NOT GOING BACK /KAMALA 2024.” “HARRIS, OBVIOUSLY” “JOY. TRUTH. DECENCY. HARRIS FOR PRESIDENT”

What's happening is truly scary and the replay of Trumps behavior in the aftermath of the 2020 election is guaranteed. I'm a Michigan grad so Ann Arbor is a special place for me. I met my wife there when we went to school together and we've been happily married for 41 years. We'll be back in Michigan in a couple of weeks for a family wedding and will be spending two days at the end of our trip in Ann Arbor.

I live in a very red area in Wisconsin and even here and in other more rural parts of the state I'm seeing a lot more Harris - Walz signs which I'm very happy to see. The current political rhetoric is truly frightening and another four years of Trump would tear apart this country. I hope the positive energy that the Harris - Walz campaign generates brings out a lot more people to vote. Hopefully she'll win and with luck we can turn down the temperature and turn up the civility.

Thanks, David. We need encouraging signs so your piece on Harris/Walz signs sprouting in formally foul ground is welcome; so, too, Christine’s post.

Because of the US Supreme Court President immunity decision, here is what we know: trump, if re-elected, on Inauguration day can declare again an immigration emergency or if Americans organize a peaceful protest, he can use these to declare a national emergency and send troops into our cities and towns. This is not the “seal team 6” scenario but even worse. As we saw on 1/6/2021 when some active duty and numerous veterans participated in the insurrection and it appears numerous former military leaders plus DoD personnel were in on a higher level plot, I suspect the military will cave to trump and the Supreme Court will back his actions as “immune.”

"The plural of anecdote is not data" needs to be on a coffee mug, or a T-shirt, or something. Data-driven policy wonks would love it. Maybe DSR would consider it?

That's an encouraging and plausible thought about Arab and/or Muslim voters coming around to vote for Harris-Walz. Fingers crossed -- Michigan is important. I might try that approach with my colleagues in the local Israel-Palestine group who swear they won't vote for Harris-Walz because they're so angry at the U.S. for continuing to support Israel with arms.

To make it an observational study of 2, living in rural Coastal OR and a county that voted for Trump in the last two elections, I agree . . . Finally I see Harris/Walz signs, and rallies are having incredible turnout along the infamous Hwy 101. Yes, the billboards size signs are still implanted on some properties with flags every few feet around their compounds, and pickup trucks that make you sure that there is a proud boys’ training in progress . . . And when we rally and play music and proudly show our Harris/Walz signs, Ts, hats, etc. . . . Lots of honks and waves of support and then they come, flipping us off, rolling smoke from their truck pipes (and I’m like ‘yes’ burn that money) . . .but the joy is greater, and the Trump signs are FAR fewer, and I hope . . . .

Astute and on target as always. I heard you on Joy Reid's show tonight also. She was right you were the perfect person to speak.

Although I'd prefer to think otherwise ( that previous trump supporters have seen the light) I think it's overlooked how totally and completely fucking exhausting this MF is.

I think people were excited by the chaos in 2016 that he brought. By 2020 they were exhausted and just wanted normal. President Biden was and is normal. No more governing by insane tweets. No more fascist reality tv show in our faces 24/7. By 2024 the exhaustion is even greater. This MF just won't go away. What did Hakeem Jeffries say? He's like the bad boyfriend you broke up with that just keeps driving by your house in circles.

I think part of why she'll win is not just because of policies but also because of exhaustion.
