I’m a skeptic. I never take anybody’s word or better yet, truth statement on its face without some evidence to back it up. What makes that statement true ? Give me some empirical evidence or evidence from deductive logic. The cynic says “fuck em all, they all do it. What are you going to do about it? Everybody is out to screw you over - but everyone would have to include the cynic himself. So why would I agree through my vote to put a narcissist /demagogue in the White House. But Trumpti said he would be a dictator on day one. so I’m going to say I will only be a cynic towards Trump on day one…Trust me

Well really I think the leaders of Ukraine, France and or Great Britain fit the bill perfectly!

This was brilliant and sad and true, but one of its many insights cracked me up: the perfect characterization of JD Vance as Trump's "slavering Igor-by-way-of-Eddie-Haskell henchman." (The in-house editor sez the "-like" isn't necessary.) Maybe one has to be of a certain age to catch the Eddie reference, but I hope it catches on and gets memed.

David, your work is so clear, focused, intense and so informed! A life spent well in studying this system we live in and also the world. I’m proud know you. You are reaching folks! We are attempting to get a protest group together with Indivisible’s help. I’m showing my Great Americans videos at the very engage Cultural Centerhere. I’m hope the message of social justice in all will remind folks of what we are losing—have lost. Thanks. Larry

Definitely one of your best. The sacrifices of the military personnel - the ones alive still somehow vote for Trump - who've died defending freedom, democracy and the "American" way of life are diminished, perhaps permanently. The Russian mafia Don is doing what he set out in his first interview many years ago with Barbara Walters. The Republicans, in their quest to force minority rule have brought this on. We're screwed.

David -- I think it is perhaps a little easier for those of us who have always been critical of American empire to see what Trump is doing than it is for those who felt more comfortable with America's role in the world since ... well for me it was Vietnam. Your mileage may vary. We've never been angels. Here we all are in the worst of places.

Trump seems to have irrevocably put us on the side of evil. In the last century, the result of policy like Trump's was devastating wars. He's personally a wimp, but this is where unrestrained contestation between amoral competitors is a recipe for disaster, even if this nitwit is too bumbling to know it.

I have never signed up for a podcast. I don't know which hoops to jump through to do that, and I feel superior, but not in light of what I may be missing out on.

It isn't exactly that. I have one but am always out of data. I guess that means I'm paying more than I should. I have no clue on podcasts. There may be an app I have to blindly install. Thank you for the solidarity.

If you want the police or the FBI to know where you are at all times, keep that cell phone operational. Otherwise, don't bother. Some incidents with the FBI in the late Sixties and early Seventies taught me that they're really not people with whom you want to spend any time.

Perfectly worded, written; such an accurate statement of the devastating trampling on, trashing on all that we Americans hold dear. I’m beside myself; totally off balance. David, thank you for reminding us of what is in front of us and what we have suddenly lost from our imperfect but cherished democratic past.

We need to mobilize to stop Trump now before he can do more irreparable damage. National work stoppages? Mass civil disobedience? Whatever it takes to bring this regime to the ignoble end it deserves. The cost of inaction on our side will not only be devastating, it will also make us collaborators in the demise of our values.

But where is our leadership?

I would like to see what Timothy Snyder has to say about this contretemps. What chapter in "On Tyranny" are we in? I did not know that he was in Britain. That is disturbing.

I’ve stated several times before we got the government we voted for. America will pay a huge price for those votes and we deserve every bit of worldwide animosity. My hope is that the Trump voters will wake up and realize how badly they are being hurt and demand different. At the very least think harder before the next time Trump or someone like him runs for office. Perhaps they’ll also revisit their trust in Trump and the Republicans after our economy tanks and a recession hits and prices don’t go down, they go up. Unfortunately all of this is coming. We are barely a month into Trump’s presidency.
