My malamute, Tam, would like to meet Grizz -- but on second thought that probably wouldn't be a good idea. <g>
I love NtK. I love the DSR network, but there's so much in it these days I can't keep up with all of it no matter how hard I try. I very much value the focus on long-term thinking.
What's needed: How to make "the economy" comprehensible to those of us who aren't news + history + economics junkies? For over a century, mostly serious leftists (socialists and communists) were the only ones talking seriously about economics. How to persuade more non-news-junkie USians that democracy and "free-market" capitalism aren't joined at the hip? Damned if I know. My audience is small and mostly converted already.
#2 (or maybe #1 depending on my mood at the moment): Women's interests don't chart on the left-right continuum, which is overwhelmingly based on male priorities. We are a potential wedge in the left-right continuum, as seen in the divergence around reproductive rights. White women (of whom I'm one) don't fit on the left-right continuum. Women of color *really* don't fit. (Men of color? Well, it depends . . .)
Is there a way to incorporate this into the DSR network? I don't know. For sure the Pod Save America boys haven't been able to do it -- I gave up on them a couple years ago.
So happy to read this. I joined the DSR Network & became a member in the election aftermath. We need your voices & your podcasts. I listen to them all. Especially love Greg Sargent, Words Matter, and the 'main' podcast that you host. Thanks. Siempre adelante!
David, I cannot thank you enough for your hard work and your perspective. At first I was going to completely shut out politics. I have to admit as I taught on military bases overseas most of my life and raised a son politics were never on my radar as I did not have America radio or tv. So I don’t have political strength.
Bring retired and have some so vibrant like Kamala and a teacher like Tim running I had fun and had so much Hope. And I just wasn’t prepared for the outcome. You and Simon are the two folks I have paid subscriptions for. I see others who I will likely sign up for, but I just want to thank you for giving me a sane and balanced way of being involved without being distraught about the number of people in the US and the world who value money and racism and sexism so dearly.
I loved your descriptive walk in the woods.....we all need to realize our place in the universe but especially on planet earth. I live in a rural area of Oregon so I could easily visualize the nature you described. Saying "thanks" seems too small for all that you contribute to the public conversation. Keep it up. We all need it now and in the future.
David, thank you and the rest of the DSR team for all of your excellent work. I follow many podcasts and substacks and yours is one of my favorites. Please continue to have a restful and reenergizing holiday with your wife and Grizzly.
More light and less heat is great advice. I’m already exhausted and can’t spend the next four years reacting to every idiotic statement from Washington. I like the idea of working with others as needed and looking for wins we can achieve. Purity for either side is a losing strategy. Let’s make the best of the hand we’ve been dealt. We have the government we voted for so we need to do lots of listening. Not everything the Republicans want is wrong or bad. Let’s keep talking and shape outcomes as best we can. Thanks for your continued columns and thoughtful essays.
What a post! Talk about checking to see who I was reading. Thanks for the peek under the hood at this unexpected side of you, I'm quite moved and remain happy to be along for the ride. Do know that your snark (vs your outrage) is a joy and a lightness all its own.
Feedback re:DSR: more informed focus on women and the on-going fight for our lives. Despite Rosa, Kavita, etc., DSR's energy is overwhelmingly male. on Jessica Valenti's Substack is required reading for anyone with your smarts and humanity.
Most of all, David, I appreciate your ( sometimes gallows) humor. I am a DSR member and check your podcasts daily to see what is in store. Love them all.
Thanks David, well said. You’ve shown yourself to have integrity and also the willingness to search for the truth and adapt. I will stick with you as long as you remain honest and not adopt positions that are contrary to your previously stated values (not necessarily positions). I like your positive approach with light.
We all need a walk to touch magic of nature at least once a week to maintain our sanity. I really enjoyed your description of your walk. Beautifully done.
My wife and I have decided to divorce ourselves as much as possible from trump and his clan. We were way too involved and angry every day.
Thank you for your steadfastness, perspective, commitment to the truth and telling the story of the world as it is, not to mention some little needed humor. I’m grateful for the pleasure of your ‘company.’
Thanks for the break David!

You sounded more like Thoreau

Love the “more light, less heat” point of view. I’ve come to the same conclusion in my personal life.
