In the past several days, events have unfolded that have underscored how important it is for the U.S. to be led by serious people like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
While Trump and his supporters have sought to use those events to make political hay, the opposite has happened. Trump’s comments have confirmed yet again his dishonesty, incompetence, cynicism and inability to serve and protect the American people as an American must. On the other hand, Harris in particular, has been engaged, an effective communicator and leader, and has shown herself to be ready for the presidency right now in a way that Trump will never be.
The battering Hurricane Helene delivered to the Southeastern United States offered the first illustration of this vital point. Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee felt the brunt of the storm. Scores died. Hundreds are still missing. Towns were wiped off the map. It was brutal.
Even before the storm, however, the Federal government began to make preparations. As soon as it hit, FEMA moved into action. President Biden reached out to governors of affected states to get their read on the situation on the ground and to offer his support. Vice President Harris cancelled her campaign schedule and returned to the White House to work with the president ensuring rescue and relief operations were advancing as the situation required. Both Biden and Harris will visit the disaster zones. Both offered words of compassion, support and commitment. It was an efficient, text book disaster response.
